The problem it solves

Spotify only allows its music to be played outside its own apps through its APIs, and within strict limits. Spotinamp is a practical case of building a complete desktop product on top of a third-party platform: what it allows, what it doesn’t, and how to solve what’s missing without breaking its rules.

What it automates

It automates the connection between two systems that don’t talk to each other. Every button of classic Winamp becomes a command for Spotify, and the session, the queue and the window positions are saved on their own.

What it does

  • Real windows

Main, equalizer, playlist and visualizer float freely on the desktop. They drag and snap to each other.

  • All your Spotify music

Search songs, artists and albums, and open your playlists, liked songs and recently played.

  • A visualizer that follows the beat

The bars and MilkDrop move with the actual sound coming out of the computer.

  • Classic skins

Load the old .wsz skins from the menu or by dragging the file in.

  • Queue and “jump to”

Press J, type, and jump to any song in the queue.

  • Remembers everything

On close it saves the queue, the track, the volume and where each window was.

How it’s built

  1. 01

    Web interface

Webamp, a replica of Winamp in HTML, with a custom audio engine that replaces its own.

  2. 02

    Spotify connection

The Web Playback SDK plays the audio and the Web API provides the library, search and playlists. Sign-in needs no server of our own.

  3. 03

    A minimal native program

A 38 KB executable in C# hosts the page with WebView2. The full package is under 1 MB.

  4. 04

    Sound for the visualizer

Because Spotify’s audio is protected, the program captures the computer’s output only to draw. Nothing is recorded.

It’s the same work we do when we connect your systems: read an API’s documentation, respect its limits and build something on top that your team uses without thinking about what’s behind it.
